Mixed reaction to postcode plan

There has been a mixed reaction to the government request for a new national postcode system.

Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey has said that every address in Ireland will be identified by a series of letters and numbers from January 2008.

An Post reckons that it is unnecessary while Fine Gael have expressed their scepticism that it will ever get off the ground.

DHL express spokesperson Bernard McCarthy says the current system, which relies on local knowledge, is out-dated.
