A teenager was being questioned by gardaí tonight after a sawn-off shotgun was fired over the heads of gardaí in a street in Limerick.

Uniformed officers were patrolling the Thomondgate area in the north of the city when the attack happened just before midnight last night.

Gardaí had stopped to speak to a group of youths on the Quarry Road about 1km from the city centre when the shot was fired.

The 19-year-old was being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and a sawn-off shotgun was recovered in the incident.

None of the youths gardaí had been talking to at the time of the shooting were injured.
