A young French student is recovering in hospital after being brutally stabbed at the entrance to her apartment block in Dublin city centre on Tuesday night.

The woman, who is in her early 20s, was attacked as she was about to enter the apartment block at Bertram Court in the Christchurch area.

She suffered serious stab wounds to her neck, arms and hands and underwent emergency throat surgery last night.

Reports this morning said an attempt may have been made to cut her throat.

The motive for the attack is unknown, but gardaí believe she may have known her attacker, who appeared to have been waiting for her.
