Politicians and clergy welcome election of new Pope
The President, the Taoiseach, opposition politicians and Catholic bishops in Ireland have all welcomed the election of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as Pope.
The 78-year-old German, a conservative who was regarded as Pope John Paul II's closest ally, was chosen to lead the Catholic Church yesterday.
