Margaret Hassan to receive Tipperary peace prize

The Irish-born aid worker who was murdered by Iraqi militants last year is to receive one of Ireland's most prestigious awards in recognition of her work.

Margaret Hassan, who was born in Dublin and raised in Britain, was murdered after being kidnapped in Baghdad last October.

Her killing was videotaped by her captors, but the 59-year-old's body has never been recovered.

Ms Hassan was the local head of the British charity CARE International and had been living and working in Iraq for 30 years.

She was married to an Iraqi, Tasheen Hassan, who will be presented with the Tipperary International Peace Price on her behalf at a ceremony sometime later this year.

Previous winners of the award include Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton and Bob Geldof.
