Damning report attacks Garda human rights record
A new report has branded the Garda Síochána as a force with a poor human rights culture and record.
The independent audit was commissioned by the Garda Commissioner.
The examination has said that there is little evidence that human rights are embedded in either the policy or operational procedures of the force.
It finds many gardaí would not feel able to report colleagues who are involved in human rights abuses.
It notes the concerns of those who took part in the audit about human rights abuses in the exercise of police powers and shows garda procedures and operating practices can lead to institutional racism.
Reacting to the report the Garda Commissioner said he has launched an action plan to deal with these and other problems in the force.
