The Government's economic think-tank has recommended that a special property tax be imposed on holiday homes that remain vacant for most of the year.

The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) said tax reliefs encouraging investment in holiday homes should be scrapped and a special tax or other measure should be imposed to recoup the cost of the infrastructure needed to serve the buildings.
