Review considers childcare payments to grandparents

The possibility of the State making payments to people who look after their grandchildren is reportedly being considered as part of a review of the childcare system.

Reports this morning said the payments would be similar to the carer’s allowance, where family members who look after an incapacitated relative are entitled to around €8,000 a year.

The review, set up by the Department of Social and Family Affairs, is also reportedly looking at the possibility of additional child benefit payments for low-income families.

Other suggestions under consideration include tax credits to offset the cost of childcare and measures to increase the supply of childcare places, including the possible expansion of a local authority childcare system.
