The Association of Secondary Teachers has said stress is the main occupational hazard for its members and accounts for one-third of all teacher absences in Irish secondary schools.

The association said a survey it conducted in 270 schools found indiscipline, overcrowding and inadequate health and safety procedures were creating huge problems for teachers.
