GRA condemns statement from Jerry McCabe killers
The Garda Representative Association has expressed outrage at a statement released yesterday by the IRA killers of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe.
Mr McCabe was shot dead and his colleague, Garda Ben Sullivan, was seriously wounded during a botched IRA robbery at a post office in Adare, Co Limerick, in 1996.
In the statement, the four men jailed for manslaughter in connection with the killing apologised for their actions and said they never intended to attack any members of the Gardaí.
However, GRA spokesman Paul Brown, who was the first garda on the scene after the shooting, said he did not believe this was true.
He said one of the raiders fired 17 shots at the two gardaí and it was "utter rubbish" to say they didn't mean to harm any officers.
