Carlow sugar factory to close

The 80-year-old Carlow sugar factory is due to close this afternoon with the loss of 190 full-time and 130 seasonal jobs.

The closure was announced in January with the factory's owners, Greencore, blaming impending EU reforms that will involve cuts in subsidies and quotas.
