Celtic Linen has announced plans to lay off 80 workers at its plant in Carlow town as part of a restructuring plan.

The company, one of Ireland's leading textile rental firms, informed staff this morning that the facility would be shut down later this year.

It said the move was part of a plan to consolidate operations at its main plant in Wexford.

Celtic Linen provides a textile rental and laundry service to hotels, hospitals and commercial clients and has been operating in Carlow since the mid-1960s.

The company said it would continue to employ 400-plus workers in Wexford, Dublin, Cork and a new distribution depot planned for Carlow.
