The Garda Representative Association has welcomed the Taoiseach's vow not to grant early release to the IRA killers of Garda Jerry McCabe.

The Garda Representative Association has welcomed the Taoiseach's vow not to grant early release to the IRA killers of Garda Jerry McCabe.

Garda McCabe was shot dead during a botched post office robbery in Adare, Co Limerick in 1996.

The Government had been prepared to release the IRA gang convicted of manslaughter in connection with the killing as part of a comprehensive peace settlement in the North last year.

However, that deal collapsed and Bertie Ahern has now said that the possible release is no longer negotiable.
