Hospital strike threat averted

The threat of industrial action by hospital consultants in the row over malpractice cover has been averted today.

The strike was due to go ahead next month, but following a meeting today, the national council of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association decided against proceeding with the action.

Furthermore, it has also decided to join with the Government in taking legal action against the Medical Defence Union, the UK insurer who prompted the crisis by withdrawing cover for the medical staff.

Donal Duffy, of the IHCA, said they made the decision after receiving legal clarification on a letter received from the Government earlier this week.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has welcomed the news.
