Health report calls for complete review

The Department of Health has today published a report into the general medical services which calls for a complete review of the scheme.

The cost of the scheme at €1.4bn in 2003 has been steadily rising.

According to the report, carried out by Deloitte & Touche, the main factors driving up the costs have been increased drug costs and greater prescribing.

The most significant criticism from this report concerns the granting of medical cards to everyone over the age of 70, regardless of means.

It recommends the government undertake an evaluation of the cost benefit for those in this age group as well as better monitoring of GP prescribing.

It will be up to the newly formed Health Service Executive to incorporate its findings in the ongoing restructuring of the health system.
