Thousands without power after overnight storm

Several thousand homes in northern and western areas are still without power today following the overnight storm that lashed all parts of the country.

The storm appears to have caused less damage than predicted, but motorists have been advised to remain vigilant for fallen trees and other debris that may have been blown onto roads.

Gusts of up to 60mph are still being reported in parts of Connacht and Ulster, but Met Eireann has predicted that the winds should ease as the day progresses.

A truck driver in the North is the only known Irish fatality as a result of the storm. He died when his vehicle was blown off the Foyle Bridge in Derry yesterday afternoon.
