A security guard has been hospitalised after he was shot in the leg during a raid on a cash-transit van in Clane, Co Kildare, this morning.

A security guard has been hospitalised after he was shot in the leg during a raid on a cash-transit van in Clane, Co Kildare, this morning.

The robbery happened while the van was making a delivery to the Ulster Bank branch in the town just after 9.30am, but further details are sketchy.

The injured security guard was taken to hospital in Naas, where his condition is not yet known.

The number of raiders involved and the amount of money stolen have also yet to be ascertained.

Two vehicles were used by the raiders, one of which was found abandoned outside Clane a short time after the robbery.
