Up to 700 volunteers have joined in the search for an 11-year-old boy who has been missing from his home in Co Cork since Tuesday evening.

Robert Holohan was last seen leaving his house in Midleton on the bicycle he received as a Christmas present.

The bike was subsequently found in a ditch a half mile from his home, but there was no sign of the youngster.

Gardaí are co-ordinating the search for the 11-year-old, which involves sub-aqua divers, an air support unit, sniffer dogs and 24 members of the Defence Forces.

Detectives investigating the disappearance have asked anyone who was playing in the East Cork Golf Club on Tuesday evening and who may have information about the missing boy to come forward and contact them.
