Irish and British govts to sign new deal on Sellafield today

The Irish and British governments are due to sign a new agreement today that will give Irish inspectors improved access to the Sellafield nuclear plant and its security arrangements.

The Irish Government has already taken a number of legal actions against Britain over the Sellafield plant due to fears about dangerous emissions and the possibility of a terrorist attack on the facility.

The Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition has stated that its ultimate goal is to have the factory closed down for good.

Today's agreement is due to be signed by Environment Minister Dick Roche and British Ambassador Stuart Eldon during a special ceremony in Dublin's Custom House.
