A pensioner died after she was trapped under a bus, police said today.

A pensioner died after she was trapped under a bus, police said today.

The 85-year-old woman and her husband were trying to cross Great Victoria Street in Belfast city centre at around 5pm yesterday when they were struck by the vehicle.

Her husband was knocked on to a footpath, suffering minor injuries, but she was caught underneath the bus.

Fire crews had to use special equipment to free the woman.

However, she died after being taken to the city’s Royal Victoria Hospital.

Police today appealed for witnesses to the tragedy to come forward.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
