Postal services cancelled as workers mount one-day strike
Postal services throughout the country have come to a standstill this morning due to a one-day strike by members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU).
The union organised the stoppage in protest at what it claims is An Post’s repeated breaches of union-management agreements.
The union said it was most angered by the company’s decision to close its SDS parcel delivery service and its failure to award pay increases due under the social partnership process since November of last year.
All collections and deliveries have been cancelled throughout the country because of the strike, while post offices run directly by An Post will also be closed for the day, disrupting payments to 30,000 pensioners.
The stoppage is expected to cause further delays in the coming days as the company works to clear the backlog.
Meanwhile, thousands of postal workers are expected to march on the Dáil today to highlight their situation.
