The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is expected to meet the Garda Representative Association later today to discuss the Government's admission that the killers of Garda Jerry McCabe could be released as part of a Northern Ireland peace deal.

Mr Ahern told the Dáil last week the Government would recommend the four men convicted of killing Garda McCabe be released early as part of efforts to secure IRA decommissioning and rescue the peace process.

The Government had previously promised they would serve their full sentences. The GRA has vowed to fight against the release.
