AIDS Alliance warns against complacency
The Dublin AIDS Alliance has warned about ongoing complacency surrounding the risks of HIV and AIDS, particularly among young people.
The warning was issued to coincide with World AIDS Day, which takes place today.
The Dublin AIDS Alliance said it would use the annual initiative to highlight the growing number of women contracting HIV.
Almost 40 million people worldwide are infected with the virus, with women becoming increasingly more vulnerable.
The Dublin AIDS Alliance said one person tests positive for HIV in Ireland every day. It said 196 cases of the virus were reported among women in 2003, compared to just 31 five years previously.
