PSNI: 'Train death man was husband of murder victim'

A man sought by detectives after the murder of his wife took his own life by jumping in front of a train, police confirmed tonight.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the body of a man found lying on the railway line outside Larne in Co Antrim has been identified as John Armstrong.

Murder squad detectives had been looking to speak to Mr Armstrong since yesterday morning when the body of his wife, Cathy, 37, was discovered at Recreation Road in Larne.

Mrs Armstrong was found with chest wounds, possibly caused by a stabbing.

Officers spent yesterday trying to locate her husband and the family car a blue Vauxhall Corsa.

Late yesterday evening the family car, licence plate UCZ 1626, was located close to a boat-slip at Carnsunnock.

PSNI officers then found the body of Mr Armstrong this morning after he was hit by a train at around 7.25am.

Detectives stressed that the murder inquiry was still ongoing and it was not established that Mr Armstrong had killed his wife.

Forensic scientists and police were tonight combing the scene at the reopened railway line between Larne and Glynn village for evidence.
