Opposition says defence forces not equipped for terror attacks

Fine Gael is calling for more investment in the defence forces in the upcoming Budget.

The Party's Defence Spokesperson Billy Timmins said that in a time of a heightened global risk of terrorism, the defence forces are not equipped to deal with a possible attack on Irish soil.

Deputy Timmins said three quarters of the force do not have the resources to protect themselves from a biological, nuclear or chemical emergency.

The Fine Gael TD said that out of the 24,000 personnel in the regular and reserve defence forces, only 7,000 have been provided with sets of protective clothing.

He urged the new Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea to secure funding to purchase protective suits for all members of the defence forces.
