Heavy wind and rain predicted as storm approaches

Ireland is today bracing itself for high winds, heavy rains and the possibility of flooding as a gale force storm begins to lash the south of the country.

Met Eireann has predicted that the storm will have reached Dublin and Galway by lunchtime, before spreading to northern counties as the day progresses.

The south and east of the country are expected to be worst-hit, but forecasters have issued flood alerts in all areas due to high tides and the existence of a low-pressure weather system.

Farmers, construction workers and motorists have also been warned to take extra care, with winds of up to 80mph and as much as 80mm of rain predicted for some areas.

The storm is expected to continue overnight before easing off tomorrow.
