ICTU maps out road plans in pre-budget submission

The Government is being urged to consider buying the West Link toll bridge in Dublin through a Compulsory Purchase Order in order to ease congestion on one of Ireland's most important routes.

The Government is being urged to consider buying the West Link toll bridge in Dublin through a Compulsory Purchase Order in order to ease congestion on one of Ireland's most important routes.

This is one of the suggestions made by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in its pre-budget submission.

The ICTU also suggested a €5,000 levy on sports utility vehicles of over 2.4 litres.

ICTU's economic adviser Paul Sweeney says other countries, such as Sweden and France, have already done this, and Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is planning to introduce environmental controls on similar vehicles.
