Three gardaí accused of assaulting a member of the public during the Reclaim the Streets protest on College Green, Dublin in May 2002 have gone on trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

A jury was sworn in for the trial of garda Ronan Judge and garda Thomas Victory of Store Street Garda Station, and of garda Paul Daly from Pearse Street Station this morning. The trial will be heard before Judge Yvonne Murphy.

All three pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Rory McMonagle, Neville Road, Rathgar, during the protest at College Green on May 6, 2002.

The trial, in which the prosectuion is set to call 11 civilian witnesses in addition to witnesses from the Store Street and Pearse Street stations, is expected to last until the end of next week.
