Detectives in south Belfast appealed for information tonight after armed robbers crashed into two cars when trying to make their getaway.

Three men held held up a security van at Finaghy Road crossroads which had been collecting money from a supermarket.

They used a gun to threaten the Securicor security guard before making off with a cash box containing a substantial amount of money.

The gang fled the scene in a white Mazda which was then abandoned at Orpen Park. As they drove off in a second car, a silver Citroen, they collided with two other vehicles.

They abandoned their car and escaped on foot after the crash. It is not believed anyone was seriously injured.

Police later recovered the two vehicles used in the robbery, the cash box and a firearm.

They have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
