PSNI planning to remove fortifications from 17 stations

The PSNI is planning to remove heavy fortifications from up to 17 police stations in the North, according to the SDLP.

Party spokesman Alex Atwood said details of the plan were outlined to him during a meeting with PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde in Belfast today.

He said Mr Orde was seeking funding for the plan from the British Government's Northern Ireland Office.

The removal of fortifications from PSNI stations is part of the demilitarisation of Northern society under the Good Friday Agreement.
