An new institute to monitor global warming and climate change is due to be opened at the NUI in Galway today.

Scientists at the Environmental Change Institute will also carry out studies into fuels like biodiesel, which could be used to run internal combustion engines when the world's oil supplies run out.

The scientists believe efforts to produce such fuels should be prioritised as global oil supplies begin to dry up.

Speaking ahead of today's opening, Professor John Simmie said biodiesel in particular could also help reduce pollution.
