Plans to double child worker vetting staff
Junior Minister Brian Lenihan has announced plans to double staff numbers at the Garda Central Vetting Unit in the coming months.
The move is designed to improve procedures for vetting staff at voluntary organisations that work with children and vulnerable adults.
Groups like the ISPCC and the National Youth Federation have been calling for increased vetting for some time.
Announcing the move today, Mr Lenihan said Garda vetting alone was not enough to protect children.
"The fact that you contact the vetting unit and discover that a person does not have a record does not automatically clear that person," said the Minister. "You must obtain references and you must check them out."
