Gardaí in Castlebar have released the names of the two people killed in a housefire in the town as 35-year-old Anthony Magnone and his six-year-old daughter Toiri.

Gardaí in Castlebar have released the names of the two people killed in a housefire in the town as 35-year-old Anthony Magnone and his six-year-old daughter Toiri.

The fire broke out just before midnight at Castlepark, Castlebar.

Mr Magnone managed to carry one of his daughters to safety but died when he re-entered the blazing house in a bid to rescue his other daughter.

Emergency services found his body in the kitchen of the house and the body of his daughter was discovered in an upstairs bedroom.

Mr Magnone was originally from Tully, Co Monaghan.

His family had moved to Castlepark in recent months having previously lived in the Ballina area.

The scene of the fire has been closed off for technical examination and post mortem examinations are to be carried out on the bodies today.
