Tragic mother and daughter mourned in Cork

A 33-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter have died after the car they were travelling in was swept away by a flash flood in Co Cork yesterday afternoon.

The accident happened on the Glengarriff to Bantry road.

Reports this morning said the mother, who has been named as Orla O'Driscoll, managed to get her six-year-old son Fionan to the riverbank after her 4x4 vehicle became trapped by the swollen Coomhola River.

However, she was unable to get her daughter, Muire, to safety before a wall of water swept them away.

The six-year-old ran down the road to raise the alarm, but his mother and sister were found dead a number of hours later.
