€638m paid out by the VHI last year

The VHI has said it paid out €638m in benefits to hospitals and doctors on behalf of its members to the year ended February 2004.

€4.8m was paid for more than 430 heart bypass operations and almost €4.5mn in respect of 1,200 members requiring breast cancer surgery.
