Equality body welcomes ruling on race discrimination case

The Equality Authority has welcomed the Labour Court’s decision to award €15,000 in compensation to a migrant worker who was sacked from her job after being wrongfully accused of stealing bananas.

The court found that Campbell Catering’s decision to dismiss Aderonke Rasaq from her job at a Dublin hostel was discriminatory on the grounds of race.

The Equality Authority said 42% of its case files related to alleged race discrimination and it was important that a strong message be sent out to employers that such discrimination will not be tolerated.
