Hauliers warned after crackdown on waste transportation

Truck drivers who transport waste without a special permit could have their licences revoked.

Truck drivers who transport waste without a special permit could have their licences revoked.

Some 25 hauliers have already been suspended while up to 75 others are under investigation in a government crackdown on illegal dumping.

The Irish Road Hauliers' Association has said it fully supports the move. Spokesman Jimmy Quinn has urged drivers to ensure they have proper permits to carry waste.

"Hauliers will have to ensure that they will have permits if they want to carry waste and fairly innocent stuff can finish up being waste. So it is incumbent on hauliers knowing what they are carrying," he said.

"If there is any doubt, they should get a waste management permit. People who are engaged in the trade of illegal dumping deserve no sympathy from anybody.”
