Obstetrics consultant facing probe
A consultant gynaecologist was placed on leave from Sligo General Hospital pending an investigation by the Medical Council, it emerged today.
The North Western Health Board confirmed the governing body was making a formal review of Dr Victor Moore, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.
It is believed the former professor of obstetrics at Trinity College Dublin, Dr John Bonnar, carried out a private review of Dr Moore’s patients.
The health board then placed the consultant on leave.
The case is now before the policing body of the medical profession, which ensures standards and quality by practitioners.
A spokesperson for the 25-member council said: “The only time we can make a comment on an individual case is after the person has been found guilt of professional misconduct. The whole idea is everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”
The council’s disciplinary section, the Fitness to Practice Committee, investigates complaints made about the conduct of any registered medical practitioner
The health board said it could not comment on the case as it was now being examined by the Medical Council.
