The Eazy Pass payment scheme has been introduced at the toll plaza on the M1 motorway near Drogheda in Co Louth earlier than originally planned.

Customers subscribing to the service are issued with a small electronic tag, which they fix to the inside of their windscreen. On approaching the toll plaza, the tag is read by in-lane systems and the barrier gate lifts automatically.

The system is already operating successfully on the East Link and West Link toll bridges in Dublin.

It was launched in 2001 and is currently used by more than 60,000 motorists.
