The Dáil committee on members’ interests has recommended the scrapping of the system whereby TDs and Senators are given pre-paid envelopes to help conduct their business.

The proposal is designed to prevent abuse of the system.

Earlier this year, Fianna Fáil councillor Lorcan Allen used 2,000 Oireachtas envelopes to send letters to his constituents, even though he was not a member of the Oireachtas.

The Dáil committee on members’ interests has proposed that, in future, TDs and Senators be required to pay for their own postage and then reclaim the expense through a traceable receipt system.
