Adult hospitals involved in childrens' organs retention

It has emerged today that the pituitary glands of children who died at two Dublin hospitals for adults in the 1980's were removed and provided to a pharmaceutical company for research.

It has emerged today that the pituitary glands of children who died at two Dublin hospitals for adults in the 1980's were removed and provided to a pharmaceutical company for research.

Beaumont hospital has confirmed that the international pharmaceutical company, Pharmacia, supplied it with information on the donation of the pituitary glands from Jervis Street and the Richmond around 20 years ago.

The Parents for Justice group represents families involved in the organ retention controversy. It says this is the first confirmation that adult hospitals were involved in the retention of children’s organs.
