The Irish Coastguard has said an oil spill off the Connemara coast is under control and does not pose any significant environmental threat.

The oil is leaking from an old shipwreck at Ardbay, off Mweenish Island. Officials from Galway Co Council and a Fisheries Inspector are currently monitoring the scene.

Local residents had reported the incident to the coastguard, which sent a helicopter to the scene today.
