Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has met with the Parades Commission to seek the re-routing of a contentious loyalist march in Belfast this month.

Local residents voted last night to mount a major protest if the Apprentice Boys feeder parade is allowed to pass through the nationalist Ardoyne area on August 14.

On July 12, the PSNI allowed Orange Order marchers to pass through the same area in breach of a ruling by the Parades Commission.

The decision sparked fury in the area and caused the worst riots seen in Belfast for some time.

Speaking after today’s meeting, Mr Adams asked the Apprentice Boys to voluntarily forego marching through the nationalist area.
