Ian Paisley in hospital
The family of DUP leader Ian Paisley today moved to allay concerns about his health after he was admitted to hospital.
A statement released by his son Ian Paisley Jr confirmed the 78-year-old DUP leader was undergoing a series of routine medical tests.
The statement added: “His wife and family are not unduly alarmed but want the public to be aware of this fact rather than be subject to unfounded rumours, exaggeration or speculation.
“He is very grateful for the numerous calls of good wishes and especially appreciates the prayers of God’s people for him at this time.”
Speculation about Mr Paisley’s health has increased in recent years as he has reduced his workload and number of public appearances.
He decided not to contest his seat in this year’s European elections after 25 years as an MEP.
But he has consistently denied reports of ill health and has insisted he had no plans to step down as DUP leader and head of the Free Presbyterian Church.
