Harney describes NIB report as ‘deeply disturbing’

The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has described the findings of the High Court inspectors’ report into illegal practices at National Irish Bank as “deeply disturbing”.

In a statement to the media today, Ms Harney said the report detailed “an astonishing catalogue of systematic over-charging and tax evasion”.

She said what went on at NIB was not a minor oversight and she was shocked by the culture that prevailed at the highest levels of the bank’s management.

The Tánaiste said it was now up to the relevant authorities, including the DPP and the courts, to decide what sanctions should be sought against those identified as having engaged in illegal activities.

She also said the Government would not be found wanting if detailed analysis of the NIB report suggested that reforms were necessary.
