The Central Statistics Office has reported a sharp rise in personal crime in Ireland between 1998 and 2003.

The CSO said its Quarterly National Household Survey for the final three months of last year showed more than 5% of people aged 18 or over had been the victim of personal crime in the previous 12 months.
