Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy has agreed to become Ireland’s next EU Commissioner, despite saying previously that he had no interest in the job.

Mr McCreevy, who has been Finance Minister since 1997, announced the move last night, but denied suggestions that he was put under pressure by the Taoiseach to accept the post.
