Disability groups want 20% of taxis wheelchair accessible

An alliance of disability groups has called for measures to ensure that one-fifth of all taxis in Ireland are wheelchair-accessible within the next three years.

In a report published today, the groups also called for measures to ensure that all taxis are painted bright yellow to help people with visual impairments.

The National Taxi Drivers Union has criticised aspects of the report, describing them as unworkable.

Spokesman Vincent Kearns said: “I believe that we should take on board what this report is saying, but it’s not the answer.”
