Labour councillors demand opening of Cork A&E unit

Labour Party councillors are due to mount a demonstration at Cork University Hospital today in protest at the Government's failure to open a new wing at the hospital.

The councillors said the €16m accident and emergency facility has been lying idle for seven months due to a lack of Government funding.

They are demanding that Health Minister and local TD Micheál Martin provide the resources needed to open the unit.

Councillor John Kelleher said the Department of Health had not said when the unit would open and the abolition of the health boards meant that councillors could not raise questions about the matter.
