Vandals desecrate child's grave in Kerry

Vandals in Co Kerry had damaged the grave of one of the children at the centre of the Kerry babies controversy in the 1980s.

Gardaí said the grave in a Cahirciveen cemetery was vandalised sometime between Sunday night and last night.

No other graves in the cemetery were damaged.

The grave was only erected in February to replace a wooden cross marking the place where the baby named John was buried.

The baby’s body was found in Cahirciveen in March 1984 with a number of puncture wounds, but his parents’ identity and the circumstances leading to his death have never been established.
